Ingredients (what you need)

500 g all-purpose flour
1 and 1/2 teaspoons dried yeast
300 ml milk
2 tablespoons melted butter
1 teaspoon salt
1 piece egg yolk
1 piece egg for brushing
poppy seeds, coarse salt, or seeds for sprinkling

Recipe steps

First, tackle the starter. In a small pot, heat the milk until it is just lukewarm. Hot milk will kill the yeast. Pour 100 ml of milk into a bowl, add the dried yeast, 1 teaspoon of sugar, mix carefully, and let it sit for 10 minutes.

Then, sift the flour into the bowl, crack in the egg yolk, add salt, melted butter, and pour in the remaining 200 ml of milk. Finally, add the starter.

Mix well with a spoon, then turn it out onto a work surface and knead the dough. Either by hand or with a kitchen mixer. The dough must be really well kneaded. It should be shiny and smooth and should not stick to the work surface.

After kneading, put the dough back in the bowl and let it rise covered for an hour at room temperature.

After this time, divide the dough into 10 to 12 equal parts and make three strands from each, then braid them together.

Place the rolls on a baking tray so that they do not touch each other, and let them rise for about half an hour. Then brush them with a beaten egg mixed with a tablespoon of cold water. Finally, sprinkle them with anything you like – poppy seeds, salt, various seeds...

Preheat the oven to 180 °C and bake for about 15 minutes. If they darken too quickly, lower the temperature. After cooling, enjoy your meal.
