Do you want to indulge in poppy seed cake but don't have time for dough rising? Put the yeast in the fridge and prepare a quick poppy seed dessert with crumbs.

Ingredients (what you need)

Dough
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup milk
50 ml (6 tablespoons) oil
1 egg
1 baking powder
Poppy seed filling
2 cups ground poppy seeds
2 cups milk
1 vanilla sugar
5 tablespoons granulated sugar
ground cinnamon
ground cloves (optional)
Additionally
plums (optional)
Topping
0.5 cup all-purpose flour
0.5 cup coarse flour
0.5 cup granulated sugar
60 g margarine or butter

Recipe steps

First, we heat the milk almost to boiling, add the ground poppy seeds, and cook for 5 to 10 minutes while stirring constantly.

To the thick mixture, we add sugar and cinnamon, and if we have it, also ground cloves, and mix everything thoroughly. We let the prepared filling cool down.

First, we mix the flour, sugar, and baking powder. Then we add the milk, oil, and eggs, and mix everything well.

We pour the batter onto a large baking tray with high sides lined with baking paper.

Then, using a spoon, we place small heaps of the poppy seed filling onto the batter. If available, we can also add chopped plums, but it's not necessary.

Finally, we sprinkle with the crumb mixture that we made by combining all the ingredients.

We bake in a preheated oven at about 160 °C until golden pink, which takes about 40 minutes.

We check the baking by inserting a skewer into the batter. When we pull it out, it should be clean and dry, without any batter residue.
