Pea puree with smoked meat is a typical dish of Czech home cooking. Try preparing it differently by adding carrots and lovage and mixing it with pieces of smoked meat.

Ingredients (what you need)

400 g yellow split peas
250-300 g smoked meat
2 carrots
1 large onion
3 sprigs of lovage
2 cloves of garlic
1 bay leaf
4 allspice berries
1 slice of lard
1/2-1 teaspoon of salt
ground black pepper

Recipe steps

Thoroughly rinse the peas, cover them with water, add spices without salt and chopped garlic, then boil for approximately 20 minutes until semi-soft.

Carrots should be peeled, washed, and grated coarsely. Cut the smoked meat into small cubes and tie the sprigs of lovage together. Add all the ingredients to the peas and cook until soft, about 15 minutes.

At the end of cooking, just keep an eye on it, stir, and add water as needed. The puree will not thicken or be blended, so it should be thicker. Finally, remove the spices and lovage from the pot and season the puree with salt and pepper.

Peel and finely chop the onion. Fry it in lard until golden and add it to the puree, or keep it as a topping. Serve with bread and pickles.
